Denyer named V8 Supercar
"Rookie of the Year"
SUNRISE weatherman Grant Denyer was honoured at the V8 Supercar Gala Wards evening in Melbourne this week by taking out the Mike Kable Rookie of the Year award.
The annual trophy is awarded to the best performing first year V8 Supercar driver, and was wrapped up over the weekend at Phillip Island when the Summit Fleet Leasing/Jax Quickfit Ford finished 10th in the HPDC V8 Supercar series - the best of all the first year drivers.
"It was a great honour to receive such as prestigious award, particularly given the significant influence and impact the late Mike Kable had on motorsport." Denyer said. "It is something that I will treasure and is also a fitting reward for the entire team that has supported my first year in V8 Supercars."
The Phillip Island weekend started well for the DJR driver who qualified a season best 4th, only 3/10ths off team mate Canto's pole time. After a great start in Race 1 - the weatherman was running strongly in 3rd, when he was hit from behind by an out of control Mark Porter.
"He came from about 5 cars back, down the inside and on the grass, then T -boned me, just as I was turning into the corner. The hit was so hard it broke the block in the engine, and severely damaged the DJR Ford."
The team put in an all night rebuild to have the car ready for race two in an effort for Denyer to maintain his tenth place in the championship. Starting from the rear of the grid, he moved through over half the field to finish 10th, while Porter collected a $10,000 fine for the race 1 indiscretion.
Grant now heads to Melbourne for the CAMS annual award presentations this Friday night where he has been nominated alongside Craig Lowndes, Russel Ingall, Mark Skaife and others as the "CAMS Motorsport Personality of the Year"
