Whoa! What a hairy few weeks it's been.
Hey there
It's me, Grant! Not so much of a 'Dare Denyer' at the moment though, my only stunt is to roll on my side and pee in a pan, which is kind of boring but far better that what might have been!
As you may know, I took on a Monster truck 5 weeks ago... and lost. There's no footage of the actual accident but it was a fairly standard textbook jump. Somehow, something went wrong. I still don't know exactly what or why, but the force of that landing broke my L1 vertebra into 6 pieces. I was 16 foot in the air, in a 6 ton truck (would you expect anything less?). But they're built for that.
After all the things I've done on Sunrise and in a race car I never expected this to happen. I've been lowered into a tank of crocodiles, swum with Great Whites, been set on fire and jumped out of a helicopter... I never thought I'd come unstuck in something that only does 40kmh! I guess I'm not as invincible as I thought.
Although I'll be bed-bound for at least 3 months, I'm blessed and thankful that the legs that tapped their way to a 'Dancing With The Stars' trophy are all ok and I can wiggle and move them nicely. I hope to be taking small steps soon and then it won't be long until l 'paso doble' my way back to Sunrise, Australia’s Got Talent and into a race car.
Your incredible get well messages have been absolutely overwhelming and just the tonic to lift my spirits and help me focus on the good things. Thank you so much to everyone who wrote or spent a moment to think of your little busted-up buddy. I appreciate it.
The outlook is good for a full recovery. It will take time, but providing I listen to the Doc's orders to stay still.... I'll be back on my feet in no time.
Staying still though is proving harder than I thought, especially when it came to the Bathurst 1000 race a couple of weekends ago. You know how much I love my racing and it's like being sidelined during a Grand Final. Especially after my best year in the sport, leading the MINI Challenge Championship and also taking a couple of wins in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series. I just wanted to be there on the grid so much it hurt. But I know, there's always next year.
I may be down, but I’m certainly not out. I'll be back soon - just DARE me!
